The building is designed as a hybrid between architecture and infrastructure. The design incorporates open space of the newly formed square and traffic system of the bus station, which is the foundation of the basic organisational elements of the new building and the base for the structural grid.

The new Ljubljana bus terminal is located north of the railway. It touches the railway station on the south directly at the point of the newly planned canopy above the rails with which the new bus station will form a functional whole of a transport hub.

The building is designed as a hybrid between architecture and infrastructure. The design incorporates open space of the newly formed square and traffic system of the bus station, which is the foundation of the basic organisational elements of the new building and the base for the structural grid.

The building’s ground floor, which is a natural continuation of the surrounding street, is organized as a public square, with a flow of people from one street side and a flow of buses from the other. Above this main traffic area, which is shared between people and buses, other programs are vertically stacked one above the other. Directly above the traffic area is a linear waiting area, followed by the main hall on the level above, which connects to the railway station canopied bridge. Above that a two-story office building, headquarters of Slovenian Railways, is proposed.

The idea of an architecture-infrastructure hybrid is continued in the image of the building. The facade is proposed as a modular system of steel frames, where each of the programmes inside gets its own definition depending on the programme’s needs and external conditions. A final appearance, one of differently articulated programmes connected into a unified whole, emerges.
