The new Schrottenturm office complex is positioned on a steep hill overlooking Worther See, in the Carinthian capital of Klagenfurt. The location of the new complex is characterised by the imposing old tower – Schottenturm, used in the production of ammunition some centuries ago, and currently protected as a cultural and historic monument. Above it, a busy highway carved into the mountain base, closes of the location.
By breaking the program of approx. 5000 m2 office complex into 3 separate volumes, a volumetric balance is achieved – the old tower is ‘accompanied’ by 3 large ‘villas’, reminescent of the grand mansions and hotels surrounding the lake.
The cluster of three volumes is ‘based’ on the underground car parking, containing 135 cars, for guests and employees of the complex.
The buildings are positioned in such a way so that they are as far as possible from the Schottenturm, while simultaneously allowing for view from most of the offices towards the lake and protecting the main open areas around Schottenturm from excess noise from highway.
