The location of the new Jasna Resort is simultaneously quiet and spectacular – quiet, as it is surrounded by a quiet spruce forest, and seems remote and idyllic, and spectacular, because once a person ‘lifts up’ 10/15 meters into the air, above the spruce trees, it opens to a stunning 360 degree panorama of the mountains.
Building on traditional typology of a mountain shelter, can we imagine a building that is small and big at the same time, closer to the scale of the mountain, while still remaining a romantic lodge, a small chalet?
The project proposes 4 chalets – 3 small, grouped around a communal courtyard, and one large – containing all requested apartment units, on a common base (much like traditional mountain buildings), containing all parking areas and services.
The fact that there is a ‘suggestion’ for a 5-storey structure by the client (and local urban planners) is an obstacle – this kind of in-between scale (just big) is not too inspiring – neither low, in order to provide intimacy, nor high in order to offer views over the treetops, neither the scale of the village nor the scale of the city… So, rather than 5 floors – we propose a higher structure, 8 stories of apartments topped by a common spa/wellness programme overlooking the spectacular panorama.
Grouped around the communal lobby space, like another chalet form carved out of the volume of the resort building, the BIG chalet consists of 53 apartments of different sizes, with warm, wooden interiors covered by shiny metal roof, reminiscent of the traditional mountain shelters.
