Located in the idyllic setting of Brdo national park, former summer palace of the royal family near the town of Kranj, new headquarters of the Football Association of Slovenia is conceived as a ‘mix’ between the standard office typology and a ‘hayrack’ structure, traditionally used for drying grass, typical for the area.
Set in the middle of the open field, a low-slung volume is a perfect circle, all of the offices enjoying the unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. The newly formed interior garden, bordered by the connecting corridor/waiting/exhibition area is ‘planted’ with a meeting room, a conference room and series of wooden platforms, to be used for the public events and receptions.
The building is wrapped on the outside with the ‘skin’ of horizontal silver-coated wooden planks, sandwiched between concrete slabs of the floor and roof, echoing the nearby hayracks.
When seen from the air, from the planes landing at the nearby Ljubljana airport, the building also ‘represents’ its programme, looking like a ball thrown into a green field.
